Royal City Musical Theatre is inviting applications for a permanent Artistic Director to guide our artistic programming with creativity, vision, and community-focused leadership. Applications are open until January 15, 2026.
All submissions will be reviewed by an advisory panel, with interviews to follow in February. The final selection, made by our Board of Directors, aims to ensure a smooth transition for the successful candidate, including time to fully understand the role and participate in planning our 2026/27 season.

Position: Artistic Director
Organization: Royal City Musical Theatre (RCMT)
Term: 2-year probationary period, with reassessment for a longer-term engagement
Compensation: $6,000–$8,000 annually, plus additional remuneration through a creative role in the annual production (Director, Choreographer, or Music Director) based on CAEA Dot contracts. This is a part-time position with an expectation of approximately 2-4 hours a week engagement on average.

Founded in 1989, Royal City Musical Theatre is a cornerstone of musical theatre in the Lower Mainland, producing large-scale, high-quality musicals that celebrate artistry, inclusivity, and community engagement. Key Responsibilities
Artistic Leadership: Shape and articulate a compelling artistic vision that aligns with RCMT’s mission and values, including season planning and show selection.
Production Oversight: Lead the annual large-scale musical, serving in a creative role (Director, Choreographer, or Music Director).
Collaboration: Work closely with the Board, production team, and community partners to foster a supportive and inclusive environment.
Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with audiences, donors, and local organizations; contribute to outreach and fundraising initiatives.
Contemporary Practices: Champion best practices in theatre, including Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), consent-based rehearsal processes, and inclusive casting.
Qualifications
Proven experience directing, choreographing, or music directing large-scale musicals.
Strong understanding of theatre history and contemporary trends.
Up-to-date knowledge of EDI principles, consent practices, and relevant union guidelines.
Excellent communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and adaptability in dynamic environments.
Demonstrated experience engaging donors and supporting fundraising initiatives.
Ability to manage budgets and work within financial constraints.
Familiarity with RCMT and its artistic vision is highly preferred.
